Description: This spatial data provides MIDAS assigned polygon location information for ponds/lakes/reservoirs in Maine. MIDAS are lake identification numbers, many of which were historically assigned to lakes in the 1960s by the State Planning Office. MIDAS numbers with this data are used to organize, track, and visually identify lake polygon features for Maine. (Note: the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife now uses the term ‘Watcode’ instead of MIDAS.) Any needed new MIDAS are currently assigned by Lake Unit staff at the Bureau of Water Quality within the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. MIDAS are assigned in cooperation with the MEGIS/NHD Stewardship program, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and other non-governmental organizations.
