Service Description: The Maine Department of Marine Resources closes state waters to shellfish (bivalve and carnivorous snail) harvest to protect public health from shellfish-born illness. Shellfish closures depicted in this map service include: bacterial closures due to water discharges and surface water fecal coliform values monitored in accordance with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program; biotoxin closures (species-specific) based on elevated toxin levels in shellfish tissue due to harmful algal bloom-producing phytoplankton in ambient waters; emergency closures due to precipitation-driven non-point source pollution, oil spills, beached dead whales, etc.; and conservation closures enacted by municipal governments.
Data projection is NAD 1983 UTM Zone 19N.
