Service Description: The Maine DMR Bureau of Public Health closes Maine state waters to shellfish (bivalve and carnivorous snail) harvest to protect public health from shellfish-borne illness. Shellfish closures depicted in this map service include bacterial closures (surface water fecal coliform concentration and wastewater discharges, monitored in accordance with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program), biotoxin closures (species-specific closures based on elevated toxin levels in shellfish tissue due to the presence of harmful algal bloom species in ambient marine waters), emergency closures due to rainfall-driven non-point source pollution, oil spills, beached dead whales, etc., and conservation closures enacted by municipal shellfish committees. Data projection is NAD 1983 UTM Zone 19N. For more information about current shellfish closures in Maine, visit https://www.maine.gov/dmr/shellfish-sanitation-management/closures/index.html
